Why does he text me after months of not talking?

I've known him for 4 years. We went to high school together. This dude was crazy about me, he tried everything to be with me. Id always catch him staring at me in cl, but all my friends thought he was a dweeb.. So I acted like wasnt into him because everyone made fun of me that he liked me. After high school I let myself have feelings for him because I realized I loved him. After rejecting him so much, he turned the tables on me and hooked up with a girl in his dorms. I cut contact and let him go, but every couple months he randomly would text me. Last year I was on and off with another guy. And even then he would text me, last summer when I was single I told him I loved him.. He got all weird and stopped talking to me. Then a few weeks later contacted me again he told me he "likes me but resists having feelings for me." Things never end up working out, my ex always got in the way so we stopped talking. A few months later texted me again we talked a few times and he added me on facebook. Then all the sudden he was in a new relationship. Again stopped talking to me so I deleted him awhile later and he noticed that same day, so he texted me. A few months later now him and his gf have broken up last week...so he texts me AGAIN, hes been talking to me almost everyday asking me how I've been and that we should hang out. Then today I see his "ex" posted something on his wall, so theyre talking again, but I can tell shes a total b*tch. He hasnt talked to me today. So I guess shes back in the picture, I'm sure he'll contact me again. I hate this tho, I love him and think of him always. My friends say he probably loves me and has all this time, but idk what do you think? Btw we've never had so that's not why he talks to me, he knows I won't hook up with him.
