Why don't liberals debate intelligently?

Whenever I have debated a liberal or watched liberals debate, they never seem to make intelligent arguments. They normally distort their opponents' arguments and then attack the straw man they set up to represent their opponents argument or just resort to name calling and labeling their opponent as a hater or bigot. I haven't seen liberals use well thought out, logical arguments to defend their positions.
