Rose-Hulman Paradox ?
Rose-Hulman is a small school in a boring part of southern Indiana. All the students apparently study engineering and the guys outnumber the girls 4-1. The school doesn't offer the excitement of big city living (like M.I.T. does) or the excitement of big-time sports (like Purdue or U.Texas) or the diversity of people and activities that the normal university offers. So Rose-Hulman is less likely to attract the big city suburban math whizzes who may have attended high schools larger than Rose-Hulman and who are more likely to have the high SAT scores. However, I suspect the high rating is because of the way the ratings are labeled -- "#1 undergraduate-only." Nearly all engineering schools also offer graduate degrees in engineering. Rose-Hulman is one of the few engineering schools (are there any others?) that only educates undergrads. The two people I know who went to Rose-Hulman received generous financial aid packages and had multiple job offers by graduation.
